An amazing trip to Antofagasta de la Sierra
I wanted to have been to Antofagasta de la Sierra from a long time ago, so we decided to stay at Belen City and begin the travel from there. Belen is located near 300 km from San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, Catamarcas`s county town.
You could reach Catamarca by plane with Aerolineas Argentinas. There`s one flight a day in the morning from monday to saturday.
In saturday morning we started our trip to Antofagasta de la Sierra along mitic route 40. This route is excellent! There`s no much traffic and there are very few gas station so I advice you to fill tank at Belen.
When you reach El Eje you must turn left. Asphalt reaches Villa Vil town. From there to Cuesta de Randolfo is rubble road but in very good condition.
Avoid rainy season from january to march. April and may are ideal months to visit Antofagasta de la Sierra department.
When route turns into asphalt again amazing landscapes appear. At first, you can see dunes mixed with the mountains. The sand are soft and invite you to roll down as a child!
We went on driving to Reserva de Biosfera de Laguna Blanca, an Unesco`s natural reserve. It`s a different landscape that will surprise you. We were sorry we couldn`t see flamingos because in last days of april they migrate to Bolivia or Amazonas.
We arrived at El Peñon. The population is only 400 inhabitants, there`s neither phone nor internet and they can enjoy electric energy from 5 pm to 1 am. Winter is so hard that children go to school from september to may, like in North Hemisphere.
At El Peñon there are three hostels. We took lunch at Hosteria Punita, where we were welcomed by Julia and Venancio who quickly prepare the salad and the meat more delicious we had ever eaten. Visit it if you go to El Peñon.
So, it isn`t an easy trip, it takes time and an adventure spirit but the award worth the little difficults. You will see unforgettable images!
In the next post I`ll show you Hotel Belen and the Shincal of Quimivil, an archeological site near Belen. See you soon!
